In the clouded, wet, wintry London of March, 1922, two Englishwomen yearn for sunshine and warmth. Their marriages are clouded by routine, and secret sorrow, and the rain outside dampens their hope for happiness. Will a month in Italy lift their spirits? Domino Theatre’s upcoming production of Enchanted April is a charming exploration of the yearning, and the romance, which underlie this springtime adventure.
Enchanted April is Matthew Barber’s adaptation of Elizabeth Von Arnim’s 1925 novel, on the stage of Domino’s Davies Foundation Auditorium, March 7th through March 23rd at 8 p.m. nightly. Tickets $18 each through the Grand Theatre box office 613.530.2050 or at the Domino ticket office after 7 p.m. the night of the performance, subject to availability. Students and seniors $14 Thursdays only.
Enchanted April stars Andrea Hiltz and Helen Bretzke as Charlotte Wilton and Rose Arnott, the two London women with Jamie East and Ilke Hincer as their husbands, Mellersh Wilton and Frederick Arnott. Sara Sturgeon as Lady Caroline Bramble and Aerin Kemp as Mrs Clayton Graves are the two other women who join Lottie and Rose for a month’s lease in the Italian castle owned by Anthony Wilding, played by Edward Leyton. Patricia Hannah-Clow plays Costanza, the housekeeper who manages San Salvatore.
The damp dreariness of postwar London and the floral beauty of San Salvatore have been created by Stuart Payne, the Set and Lighting Designer. Sound design is by Michael Gourgon. The evocative costumes have been designed by Sarah Toomey. Ian Malcolm is the Director of Enchanted April, and Marion Savage is the production’s Stage Manager.
Enchanted April is Domino Theatre’s entry in the 2013 Eastern Ontario Drama League Festival. It will be adjudicated for the EODL Festival during its run, and is a candidate for inclusion in the 2013 Theatre Ontario Festival, May 15th – 19th hosted by Domino and taking place on the stage of the Davies Foundation Auditorium, 52 Church Street.
