Simon Mostyn has just married Kay Ridgeway, after jilting his former fiancé and Kay’s ex-best friend Jacqueline De Severac. The newlyweds set out for their honeymoon aboard a paddle steamer on the Nile River.
Also on the cruise are the ill-tempered Miss ffoliot-ffoulkes and her niece Christina, outspoken socialist William Smith, Dr. Bessner (who nurses a grudge against Kay's father), Kay’s maid Louise, her guardian Canon Pennefather and—Jacqueline, who has been stalking the couple ever since Simon broke off their engagement.
Jacqueline, increasingly hysterical, finally produces a gun. Her first shot misses the mark, but soon after there is a real murder.
Murder on the Nile is based on Christie's 1937 novel Death on the Nile, which she actually conceived as a play before deciding to write it as a novel instead. Five years later she adapted the story into a play, which opened in London in March 1946 and had a brief Broadway run later that year.
Although the novel was also made into a movie in 1978, the play and the movie are somewhat different. Most notably, Christie's famous detective Hercule Poirot appears in the book and the movie, but not in the play.
