Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up, though Sonia especially is haunted by the feeling that life has passed her by—which, to be honest, it has. Adding some colour to their lives is their housekeeper, Cassandra, and her frequent cryptic prophesies of doom.
Their peace is disturbed when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her twenty-something boy toy, Spike. She plans to attend a costume party at a neighbour's house and insists that her family dress to complement her Snow White costume. Meanwhile, she is thinking of selling the house where Vanya and Sonia have spent their entire lives. A weekend of rivalry, regret, and raucousness begins.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is one of the most lauded and beloved Broadway plays of recent years. It premiered at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in 2012, followed by an Off-Broadway production later the same year, and transferred to Broadway in 2013. The play won the Tony Award and New York Drama Critics' Circle awards for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play.
